This city is alive and kicking nearly 24/7. The buses are packed up and down the street. The heavenly smell of food and flowers hang in the thick moist… polluted air. Moisture and the idea of humidity in Colorado are silly and about as rare as a green haired digital diva getting a live concert in America.
That’s not say Colorado is dry all the time but that Colorado is completely different in general. Weather aside California is a big place and a huge diverse population. The city of LA encompasses many cultures and is a center for business and commerce, but for one week it becomes much more colorful.
From outside our hotel you can observe cosplayers and business men sharing the same sidewalk. Denny’s is packed full of characters from all your favorite shows, and so is Subway. You almost forget you’re in LA when you’re near the convention center; the sheer sum of bodies moving in and out of the center is stunning. You find yourself swimming through anime fans, and diving into photo shoots. The lines for Panels were outrageous at times and the head count at nearly 50,000 registered and 124,000 turns is colossal. The Amount of people is overwhelming at times, and simply being in the crowd all day really wears you down pretty fast.
Anime Expo brings more than just people and commerce, it brings culture, it brings flavor, and it brings an astonishing energy. The whole city breaths differently, a certain aurora alights the entire metropolis. Restaurants bring out new menus, and anime related cocktails and plates. The hotels feature different movies and even different channels, and at some hotels different room service.
Crawling around LA late night is a very enjoyable and alighting affair. The Late night crowd is always full of characters and interesting stories. Also a whole new set food and drink surface when the sun sets. Late night tacos from a truck and cocktails named after mechas is my kind of night. And it only got better when we encountered the Wizard!
The Windy Wizards of LA – Side Story
One day during our stay here in LA we were walking in group back from the Store down the street when we came across a wild man of the streets, a sage of smoke, a king of crack, a toothless one, he who rides the lightning the WIZARD!And every word is true; this lord of acid wore a cape of ragged cloth as black and stained as the Mexican Batman, his crack pipe alight with the flames of Mordor. His howl penetrates the night air “click, click, Woooop, woop!” Astonishing and amusing at the same time. We nick named this crack head the Wizard. Ever since that encounter we can’t help but chuckle about it, it reminded us of Tyrone Biggums from Chappelle’s Show.
My Stay in LA was rather enjoyable, and the convention experience was blast. The Guest line up was Spectacular, the events were amazing and the Concerts were extraordinary. The City was a lot to take in but seemed to mesh well with the anime invasion. The Miku Concert was by far my favorite of the few concerts Visited by us. In short I will be returning next year to Anime Expo.
