Review: Fireworks – Film

Fireworks a 2018 film from Director Akiyuki Shinbō  & Nobuyuki Takeuchi and Animated by Studio SHAFT hit our local theater the day after the forth of July. I was looking forward to this film. A film that attempted to ride on the coat tail of ” Your Name”. Did it live up to the hype? Well in short no. This movie was okay, but not in the same class of film as “Your name”

So what is the story? Well it’s about a girl who is moving out of town because her mother is getting re-married to another man. The new man wants to move and the daughter wants to stay. The girl decides to run away. Her school friends don’t know about this yet. Her love interest is with one boy, who uses a charm to turn back time to fix problems with the way their day plays out, but as a side effect the world begins to warp and change. The story is honestly just okay and the plot twists and turns are pretty weak. The supporting cast is pretty good and carry the comedy and charm of this film. Honestly this is like an episode of any Monogatari show, supernatural, odd at times and honestly they look very much alike as well, even the main characters resemble Monogatari series.

The overall quality of the movie was not really great, more like an average episode of anime, the writing and overall plot are average. The art quality is okay but is ruined by bad CG. The sound track was also just average, and oddly their were a few musical like parts and some odd dream scenes, almost drug induced like. Oh yeah and the translation was not the best, honestly very poor at times, they changed the meaning of the words and expressions several times just to not be as offensive, honestly a poor form of censorship. Google translate could have done this job better.

Bottom line: Rent it as a summer flick, but easily forgotten
