Simply Amazing the White House actually responded to a mass petition which might I add has 35,000+ signatures. Obama stated that if the petition reached 27,000 by January 17th he would Veto SOPA and any bill that threatened freedom of speech and the internet. Let us hope that this travesty of a bill does not make it out of the house so Obama will never have the chance to Veto it.
If you don’t know what SOPA is well just do a quick search and you will find the 99% of the internet is against this internet censorship law. Not only will this bill allow copyright holders to shut down any website they want, for no valid reason and without notice or fair trial, it also blocks known and unknown sites that are or could be used to pirate content of any type. In short, The great American DNS firewall, no more facebook, no more Youtube, no more 2 chan, no more 4 chan, no image boards, no video sharing sites, no more international trade, no more torrents, no more direct download sites, no more anime news, no more reviews, no more parody. Things that were once protect speech and expression will be shut down. No more Angry video game Nerd, no more that guy with the glasses, no more team 4 star, the list goes on and on. Tweets will be filtered, facebook filtered, myspace filtered, Google + filtered, AnimeRoot filtered. You get the idea by now, this bill is really bad news if it passes. Not only would it stop new websites and idea’s from starting up, it would infringe on small and large business that already are popular. It’s bad news for those just starting a blog or small business, it’s bad for everyone. The red tape would drive away investors and support to the internet, all for the greed of one industry.
The Anime industry would not benefit from this bill either, in fact it would disconnect fans and divided communities. This is the wrong approach to stop piracy, it won’t work and will cause great harm to everyone. It’s like using an army tank to open a jar of pickles, over kill to max and will cost us millions of tax payers dollars.
Obama says it won’t pass while he’s in office, Thank you Obama, if you betray this trust you will not see the vote of millions so be a man of your words.
