I want to keep this review fairly brief as I have a ton of other shows to talk about and I’m limited for time.
Hinamatsuri is manga that become an anime, and a really good one at that. This show surprised me weekly with it’s charm, comedy and fantastic writing. It has a odd set of relationships between the characters and is a sci-fi\comedy\slice of life sort of show. Each episode plays out with a different story but some strings carry through the entire show, so it has many good layers of story telling going on. With that said, what is this show, and what makes it good? Well, Hinamatsuri is the story of some time traveling super weapons being sent to the wrong place at the wrong time. The story mostly focusing on Hina who arrives in the home of a Yakuza member named Yoshifumi Nitta. Nitta is very surprised at first and does not believe what has shown up in his living room. A funny looking egg with a face. This turns out to be Hina, a time\space traveling girl who has super powers and was a weapon on her home world.
The story really takes off from this setup and my god it gets better and funnier as it expands. I really don’t want to spoil much in this quick review so I won’t. Further other aliens\people are sent to retrieve Hina and become stranded on Earth as well, their stories are tied to Hina and Nitta and they have their own stories as well. Some of these side stories made us cry, made us laugh and really home runned this show for us. We were hooked from episode one and we loved every episode of this show. You can really tell a lot of love and heart went into this show. Careful attention was made to keeping with the comedy from the managa and the writing was honestly very good. This show did an overall fantastic job with world building, character building and setting the stage for the story it told. The art style was fantastic, not super detailed like Violet Evergarden but it really hit the sweet spot for looking and feeling like it’s source material. The talented teams working on this was pretty extensive, and studio Feel worked with several other studios including UFOTable on some of the episodes. The Music and sound work in general were perfect, as I said this show had perfect tone to match the story being told, the music really just drove it home and the sound effects were excellent for a comedy.
