Japan Still Has The “Worlds Fastest SuperComputer”

This little server well building of servers is a monster, and can supercomputer with the best. Built back in 2009, and updated recently Fujitsu of Japan is serious about super computing. So what can these bad boys do, well they can be used to calculate data used in scientific studies, they can host massive amounts of database, and they can do it really really fast. The cost of all?  Well it’s in the billions, and the power bill well millions a year. So much like any other super computing company Fujitsu leases nodes to companies, universities, and private industries.

It the fastest in the world in terms of petaflops, though it is not the most energy friendly, but ranks decently in the upper class in terms of energy usage. I probably should mention that computer technology and processing gets faster every 6 months, and drastically changes over the span of 5 years. It is amazing that this computer is still at the top and with it’s refresh continues to push the limits of super computing. Will this beast from 2009 still hold the record in the near future over the Americans and the Chinese or even over the new and up and coming Japanese supercomputer with no formal name . Well only time will tell for sure.

The supercomputer, nicknamed “K” and being developed jointly with Fujitsu Ltd. at the institute’s facility in Kobe, retained the top post, which it first captured in June as the first Japanese computer to do so in seven years.
The feat came amid intense competition as countries race to develop ever-faster supercomputers to conduct simulations in research and development in the fields of science, industry and military.
“K” draws upon the Japanese word “kei” for 10 to the 16th power, with the word representing the system’s performance goal of 10 petaflops. One petaflop is the equivalent of 1,000 trillion operations per second.
