Zion’s Desk: The Lost Tapes

Where did Zion go, and why is he not posting news! OK So I’ve spent the last few days and nights digging through boxes, bags and crates in search for video footage. I have discovered several caches of tapesmemory stickshard drives ranging from last year all the back to the early 2000’s, some footage on DV and some even older footage on VHS. Since Youtube has recently lifted its limit on footage length once again, I have decided to share much of the footage we had deemed lost.

What why is it lost? Much of the footage was not lost in the traditional sense, it was lost to us. I have relied upon the help of others and staff members to get footage edited and posted, and sometimes this worked and other times it failed to be completed. Once upon a time we were able to post full length  videos to the web, it was easy to share with everyone. When Youtube put up the limits and filters on file size and length, things went south quickly for us in terms of video sharing. To add injury to this problem our staff has been attending college, moving from place to place and well we’ve been extremely busy with our lives and working careers. I’m not proud of this fact but it is a fact, footage has been slipping through the cracks, in short lost. I’m on a mission now to restore the lost.

Last year we recorded interviews on a low quality cam due to our budget, sadly the quality suffered even more because we had to share our interview space with other press outlets. Our plan was to record the interview and transcribe them to text, well this plan did not pan out well. Some of the questions were not clear, some of the answers could not be understood, assigned duties were not completed, it was a mess in the end.

I have received a request from readers to release the footage. Some of the footage is raw, some of it edited, and I’m starting with newer footage and working my way backwards but not in any assigned order. I have tasked myself with getting this footage out there as the rest of the staff is too busy with life. Sorry for late releases, we hope with better gear and planing that next year footage will be handled swiftly and with greater care.

My last word on this is quality, I’ve decided to tell the trolls to %$@^ off and share with you the footage that we deemed low quality. It’s amazing the amount of flack you take for posting video footage of a lower quality standard than 720p these days. All the older footage is not wide screen, and it’s not HD but it’s still okay by yesteryear standards.

Last year we decided to retire our old film cam because of the lower resolution it was limited to. But we then had to face the reality of replacing our once top of the line DV cam with something within our budget, keeping in mind we also had just upgraded our photography equipment, our budget was extremely slim. HD cams with microphone inputs, interchangeable lens, and manual focus are still to this day in the thousands of dollars range, so we settled with a pocket cam for a mere few hundred bucks. We won’t be using that cheap cam ever again, after this last experience with it, in it’s place we have a newer more expensive replacement. A Canon DSLR with HD video capability, a new set of microphones, and new led studio lighting, next year is going to be so much better overall.
